1.0 Overview

We will have a fun weekend at the New Harris Cabin on Moose Mtn. We will use the cabin as the hub of our activities, but plan on being outside and active most of the time.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will go into the cabin on Saturday morning and be there for 24 hours. We will do a number of snow related activities including the building of snow shelters and snowshoeing. We will also cook as a troop. This is a simple winter outing and all scouts are encouraged to attend.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Saturday, 16 Jan

10:00 - Meet at the Moose Mtn AT Trail Head on Three Mile Rd.
10:15 - Hike to cabin, stow gear, check cooking roster
10:45 - Start snow shelters - Phase I
12:30 - Lunch Crew starts lunch
1:00 - Lunch
1:30 - Lunch Clean-up / the rest of the troop outside
1:30 - Collect wood for the night
2:00 - Continue Shelters
2:30 - Snowshoe race or a other type of relay
3:30 - Troop Game / with snow
5:30 - Supper Crew Starts
6:00 - Supper
6:30 - Clean up
7:00 - Snowshoe hike / return by a compass course
8:30 - Campfire Program / Steve Desauliners MC
10:00 - Bed

Sunday, 17 Jan

7:00 - Wake-up
7:30 - Breakfast crew starts
8:00 - Breakfast
8:30 - Clean-up / pack up
9:30 - Leave cabin
9:30 - Game of camouflage
11:00 - Pick-up at trail-head

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

Bring extra clothing in case you get wet. The cabin will be warm, but we will be outside a lot. Be ready to sleep on a wooden floor OR in your snow shelter

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all scouts, scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing.

3.0 Administration and Logistics

3.1 Announcement Date: 9Jan08

3.2 Roster Closing Date: 16Jan08

Please sign up at the troop meeting Wednesday, 16 Jan.

3.3 Costs

$10.00 per person for use of the cabin, breakfast, lunch and dinners. Please bring this amount to the troop meeting 16 Jan.

3.4 Equipment

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Snowshoes if you have them
  • Backpack, warm sleeping bag, fleece, shells top and bottom, gloves, hat, goggles.
  • More water
  • Extra pair of shoes and clothes. This is to clean up after a day in the snow.
  • Plastic bag for dirty/wet clothes.
  • Cup, cook pot and spoon for eating.
  • Headlamp, flashlight, lantern. There are no electric lights in the cabin.
  • Appropriate clothing and equipment for winter hiking.
  • Compass
  • Optional: sled, small snow shovel

    3.4.2 Patrol Equipment

  • Games for the afternoon/evenings ??
  • Skit & song for the campfire program
  • Patrol first aid kit

  • First aid kit.
  • Map. USGS Canaan quad. Hanover Trail Maps.
