1.0 Overview

In a joint operation, Hanover Troop 45 and Lyme Troop 273 will hold a winter fun event at Nunnemacher Cabin located at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme, NH. We have the cabin from Friday afternoon, 11 March through Sunday morning, 13 March. Activities during the weekend can include downhill skiing, snowboarding, backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. The evenings will afford time for relaxing, advancement work and games.

Saturday is Boy Scout Day at the Skiway! Due to a special arrangement by Daniel Webster Council, all active Boy Scouts can ski for for $5 on Saturday.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

Nunnemacher Cabin is located between Papoose and Lyme Drop ski trails on the Holt ledge side of the Skiway. Our meeting place for dropoff and pickup will be at the ski lodge. Those who can meet on time (3:45 pm Friday) can ride the last lift run of the day up Holts Ledge, and have their gear carried up to the cabin by Sno-Cat. If you cannot arrive before 4 pm, you will have to backpack your gear up to the cabin. Once we arrive at the cabin we will organize duty rosters for cooking, cleanup, water supply, fire tending, etc.

Activities for Saturday will be organized by patrols and or buddy groups. Each patrol or buddy group departing from the cabin will be required to file an activity plan with the Scoutmaster describing the activity they are planning to undertake and their planned time of return to the cabin. Any group that is leaving the actual Dartmouth skiway property will be accompanied by two adults. Activities will include the following:

  • Alpine skiing and snowboarding on the Dartmouth skiway trails.
  • Cross country / telemark skiing on the skiway trails and in the back country along the Appalachian Trail and other nearby areas.
  • Hiking/snowshoeing on the Appalachian Trail either towards Moose Mountain or Smarts Mountain.

Each scout must provide his own "bag lunch" style dinner for Friday night. There will not be enough stove space to cook Friday night. Breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be prepared as a group. All participants will be contribute to the cost of food and all will have their turn to helping prepare meals and clean up. The cabin is equipped with wood heat and a gas stove but no running water.

2.2 Schedule of Events

There will be two times to meet and join the outing: 1545 on Friday afternoon and 0800 on Saturday morning.

General schedule will be as follows:

Friday 5 Mar
1545 -- Assemble at the Lodge. Drop gear for transport, and move as a group to the Holts Lift.
1600 -- Ride the lift to Holts; ski to the cabin. 1800 -- Duty roster organization, dinner and cleanup.
1930 -- Evening activities including advancement work (Snow Sports MB!), a night hike, and/or games.
2200 -- Lights out and all quiet.

Saturday 6 Mar
0630 -- Reveille
0700 -- Prepare and eat breakfast, cleanup dishes and cabin area.
0830 -- Flag ceremony. Organize and begin the day's activities.
1630 -- Roll call at the cabin; everyone should be back from activities.
1700 -- Dinner and cleanup.
1830 -- Evening activities including advancement work, a night hike, and/or games.

Sunday 7 Mar
0630 -- Reveille
0700 -- Prepare and eat breakfast, cleanup dishes and cabin area. Pack up all gear; be prepared to depart.
0900 -- Roll call at the cabin; closing flag ceremony. 0930 -- Depart for the lodge. 1000 -- Pickup by parents. Check out with a Scoutmaster before departing! Those who wish to stay for Sunday afternoon are free to stay and continue skiing and snowboarding if they have parental permission and supervision. (Regular price lift ticket required.)

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

This activity will be conducted at the Dartmouth Skiway, a modern ski area. Nummemacher Cabin is rustic, but safe and comfortable. There is no electricity at the cabin, but it is equipped with wood heat and a gas stove. Sleeping accommodations include thin mattresses and lots of floor space.

There is currently a winter storm warning in effect for Friday afternoon into Saturday. We'll get some snow!

  • Check the weather and dress appropriately. Drink lots of water.
  • Activities will be moderated so everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • All activities start and end at the cabin.
  • Alpine skiing will be conducted on the slopes of the Dartmouth skiway. Skiers will obey all skiway rules and comply with the Skiers Responsibility Code (This web site also has some humorous tips for preparing for the ski season.)
  • Backcountry skiers will be briefed on safety precautions and trail etiquette before they depart.
  • Hikers must be properly dressed and equipped before leaving the skiway area.

Open to all Boy Scouts, scouters, and parents.

3.3 Costs

  • $15.00 per person for use of the cabin, breakfasts and dinners.
  • $5.00 for a lift ticket for Saturday.
  • Cost of lift ticket for Sunday if desired.
  • Cost of any equipment rental if required and snacks in the lodge if desired.

    3.4 Equipment

    3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Class B uniform.
  • "Bag Lunch" style dinner for Friday evening
  • Snowshoes, Ski poles, or
  • Snowboards, snow shoes, ski poles or
  • Alpine Ski equipment, snowshoes.
  • Backpack, warm sleeping bag, fleece, shells top and bottom, gloves, hat, goggles.
  • Lunch, more water
  • Helmet is Required for ski activity.
  • Extra pair of shoes and clothes, this is to clean up after a day in the snow.
  • Plastic bag for dirty clothes.
  • Cup, cook pot and spoon for eating.
  • Headlamp, flashlight, lantern. There are no electric lights in the cabin.
  • Appropriate clothing and equipment for winter hiking.
