Webelos Hike to Storrs Pond
1.0 Overview
Each year the troop offers a hike to help the Second-Year Webelos Den satisfy the Arrow of
Light requirement for participation in an outdoor Boy Scout activity. This outing is usually a hike over
Velvet Rocks but because of the snow depth this year we are hiking in to our campsite a Storrs Pond instead. This activity is a model Scout outing, employing youth leadership, the patrol method, instruction on basic outing procedures, and lots of fun.
2.0 Concept
2.1 Description
We will hike (on snowshoes) from thes Storrs Pond main entrance to our campsite at the far end of the pond, engage in some fun activities there, and then return. During the hike we will conduct exercises in land navigation and hiking safety. At the campsite we will play some team-building games and try out some trail cooking.
2.2 Schedule of Events
0900 - Troop formation. Intorduce leaders. Teach hand signals for Assemble and Circle Up. Divide into patrols.
0920 - Start hiking. Navigation exercises and lost procedures enroute.
1015 - Arrive at campsite.
1020 - Capture the Flag
1115 - Service Project
1130 - Lunch
1215 - Return
1300 - Arrive at parking lot. Circle up. Checkout procedures.
2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty
The snow cover in the woods is still quite deep and will probably require snowshoes. Because temepratures will probably be above freezing, the snow will be quite wet as well. In places where snow cover has melted off (in the sun on southern slopes, for instance) it may be quite muddy. Ice on ponds and streams must not be trusted to hold a person's weight!
The trail around the pond may be well packed due to use by skiers, but the trail into the site will not, nor will the site itself. Snowshoes may well be essential for travel.
If it rains, expect cold water to fall out of the sky onto you. Check the weather before departure and Be Prepared.
