1.0 Overview

This easy afternoon hike is a fun opportunity to get started hiking with Troop 45 on our local mountain. Starting from the parking lot on Moose Mountain Lodge Road, we will follow ski trails to the South Summit and then descend by way of the AT to Three Mile Road.

The south summit of Moose Mountain, at 2222 ft, affords nice views to the east, looking across Goose Pond towards Mt Cardigan. The Appalachian trail climbs to the south peak from Three Mile Road, and then continues north along the ridge towards Lyme. The old Wolfeboro Rd crosses the saddle between the north and south peaks. The south side of the mountain hosts a network of cross-country ski trails that are as fun to hike in the summer as to ski in the winter.

This outing is a good opportunity for new scouts to get started hiking with the troop, and for experienced scouts to have some fun teaching hiking skills to the new scouts. This hike will provide advancement opportunites for Tenderfoot and Second Class.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will meet at the Community Center at noon and proceed from there to the upper parking lot on Moose Mountain Lodge Road. From the parking lot we will navigate the ski trails to the south summit, check out the airplane crash site, and descend the AT to its crossing at Three Mile Road.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Sunday 24Apr05
1200 -- Meet at the Community Center. Check gear and load into cars.
1215 -- Depart for Moose Mt Lodge Rd
1240 -- Arrive at trailhead. Consult maps to plan route.
1300 -- Start hiking.
1430 -- Arrive at south summit. 1500 -- Depart south summit. 1600 -- Arrive at Three Mile Road.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

This is not a difficult hike, but it will be nearly five miles long and involves a thousand feet of elevation gain. The trails are well graded, but are likely to be muddy.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all scouts, scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing.
