1.0 OverviewThis is hike is designed to allow scouts working towards second class to complete requirements for a five mile hike and land navigation skills. Smarts Mountain, prominently visible from Route 10, just north of Hanover, is the first peak north of the Dartmouth Skiway on the Appalachian Trail. The summit offers wonderful views in all directions from atop the fire tower. There are several lookout spots along the trail that are nice places to rest and to practice map and compass skills. 2.0 Concept2.1 DescriptionScouts will meet at the old hospital parking lot on Maynard Street at 7:30. Rides will be arranged, and the whole group will depart by 7:45 am. We will travel to the Lambert Ridge trailhead on the Dorchester Turnpike north of the Dartmouth Skiway. The climb is about 3.7 miles. We should reach the summit by noon, and enjoy a nice lunch. At 1:00 pm, the group will start back down the Lambert Ridge Trail, and reach the cars by 4:00 pm. 2.3 Expected Conditions and DifficultyThis is a moderate hike with some steep sections along the trail. Sturdy hiking boots are required. There is often no water at the summit; each hiker should carry at least two liters of water. Be prepared for New England weather - could be anything! 2.4 Special RequirementsNone.
