1.0 Overview

Our fifth summer Long Trek will be a canoe trip on the Connecticut River from the confluence of the Passumpsic south to the village of Orford. We will camp at establised sites along the way, taking time for fishing and swimming.

This outing is an opportunity to work on basic Scout skills, canoeing, swimming, camping, and fishing merit badges.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will drive to the Passumpsic River put-in on Friday, and then paddle south stopping each night at one of the series of campsites along the river. We will arrive at Orford on Tuesday and drive back to Hanover from there.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Wed 23Jun -- Troop Meeting Aquatic activity safety training.

Thu 24Jun -- at the Community Center 1600 -- Preparation meeting including

  • equipment distribution
  • pack inspection
  • food division, packing, and distribution

    0830 -- Travel to Passumpsic River
    1000 -- Final safety briefing.
    1015 -- On the water

    2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

    Although there is no whitewater along the Connecticut on this route, it is moving water. We must be prepared for summer weather including heat, sun, rain, and bugs. The campsites are established sites. There are two portages around dams.

    2.4 Special Requirements

    Open to all scouts, scouters, and parents. Scouts must be qualified as swimmers.

    3.0 Administration and Logistics

    3.1 Announcement Date: 1 April 10

    3.2 Roster Closing Date: 16 June 10

    3.3 Costs

    $15 per day per person for food. Please bring your payment to the troop meeting 23 June.

    3.4 Equipment

    3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Class A uniform for travel.
  • Activity uniform (summer troop tee shirt) otherwise.
  • Standard summer camping equipment. See the Personal Equipment handout for a checklist.
  • Sun hat. Required. There's no shade on the water!
  • Sunscreen. Required. There's no shade on the water!
  • Insect Repellent. Highly recommended. It's June, and we're near water.
  • Swimming shorts. Required. You don't want to be sleeping in wet clothes.
  • Water shoes. Required. You will be wading in the water, and we can't control bottom conditions. Old sneakers are fine. You must have closed toes.
  • Fishing equipment as desired. You'll need a fishing license if you are 16 or older and want to fish. A New Hampshire license will be valid for everywhere we will be.
