Summer Expedition to Baxter State Park

1.0 Overview

Each summer the troop mounts a multi-day expedition to an exciting location. On even numbered years, this expedition has been a major undertaking involving extensive preparation and training. On odd numbered years, it is a less ambitious project, but still one that gets us away for several days. For the summer of 2001, we will visit Baxter State Park in Maine for four days of backpacking and a climb of Mt. Katahdin.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

This plan covers the arrangements for transportation to and from the Mt. Katahdin area and our accommodations while we are there. Separate, specific plans will be published for the hikes and other activities that we undertake at Mt. Katahdin

Because camping space in Baxter State Park is limited, we were unable to get reservations to camp in the park. We have obtained reservations for a group camp site at the Big Moose Inn, Cabins and Campground. The Big Moose Inn is located eight miles from the South entrance to Baxter State Park.

2.2 Schedule of Events

0700 11 Aug 01 - Meet at Maynard Street Parking Lot (OHP) in Hanover.

0715 11 Aug 01 - Depart Hanover.

1700 11 Aug 01 (Approximately) - Arrive at the Big Moose Campground between Millinocket, ME and Baxter State Park.

1700-1900 11 Aug 01 - Set up camp and eat dinner.

1900 11 Aug 01 - Flag ceremony and formal opening of the outing.

12-13 Aug 01 - Activities in Baxter State Park and vicinity. Specific plans to be announced

0700 14 Aug 01 - Flag ceremony and formal closing of the outing

0715 14 Aug 01 - Depart Big Moose Campground

1700 14 Aug 01 - Arrive in Hanover.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The trip will involve a full day of travel in each direction. Once cars depart from Hanover, we will not attempt to stay together. Every driver is responsible for knowing the route and making the trip.

2.4 Special Requirements

This outing is open to all scouts, scouters, and parents. The mountaineering portion requires special preparation and equipment.

3.3 Costs

Camping at the Big Moose Inn will cost $8.00 per person per night; $24 per person total
