1.0 Overview

Imagine you are on a day hike up a mountain and due to a series of unfortunate events you have been forced to spend the night there. What do you do? On this outing we will build shelters and spend the night with the stuff you might bring on a day hike.

Our emphasis is on our shelter, so you can bring water and food. But will will try to cook on a simple fire and not stoves. Also be ready for thunder-showers. August maybe a warm time of year, but it also bring unexpected showers.

Most of us will be sleeping without a tent or a sleeping bag.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will meet at the AT parking area on Three Mile road and hike in. We plan on camping off of the Clark Pond Trail, between the new Harris Cabin and the South Peak of Moose Mountain. We will hike in and build shelters Friday afternoon. We plan to leave our shelters up and return to them in November. We hike out early Saturday morning.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Friday 21 Aug
1500 -- AT trailhead - Three Mile Rd.
1600 -- Arrive at Campsite - build shelters
1830 -- Supper
2000 -- Compass Hike to Summit
2200 -- Lights out

Saturday 22 Aug
0600 -- Get up
0700 -- Breakfast
0800 -- Break Camp
0900 -- Pick-up at AT trailhead - Three Mile Rd.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The hike is simple--a mile to the campsite and later a mile up to the peak--followed by a return. The difficulty may be provided by the weather. The forecast right now for Friday night is 60% chance of thundershowers, and temperatures in the 60s.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all scouts, scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing.

3.4 Equipment

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

The idea is that you carry what you would carry for a day hike--especially on a mountain which you do not know very well. You, of course, can bring what you think appropriate, but here are a few suggestions:
  • Water
  • Fire staring (Matches as a backup.)
  • Shelter building tools. (Knife? Twine?)
  • Insect protection. (Mosquito net / head net?)
  • Raincoat (Garbage bag?)
  • Standard day hike gear for the season. See the Personal Equipment handout for a checklist.
  • Food. You are responsible for your own food. We will try to cook on an open fire, or you may try to confine yourself to cold "survival" rations. Supper & breakfast.
