1.0 Overview

This outing is an overnight bike hike from Storrs Pond to the Pastures Campground in Orford. It will inculde two crossings of the Connecticut River, and a small service project at our destination. If you don't want to bike, you can join us at the campground.

Advancement opportunities include new Scout Tenderfoot advancement, Cycling Merit Badge, and community service.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will meet at Storrs Pond entrance parking lot and travel by bike to the Pastures Campground in Orford. The route is described below. Basically, we go north on Rt 10 to River Rd, cross the river on the Thetford bridge at Lyme. We then follow Rt 5 North long enough to get on some back roads that lead us past Lake Morey until we can get back across the river on the Orford Bridge. The Pastures Campground is in Orford.

We will not carry our overnight equipment. A sag wagon will meet us at the Pastures, where we will set up camp for the night. Activities in camp will include some Tenderfoot advancement skills instruction, a simple service project, a game, and a campfire.

In the morning we will break camp, load the sag wagon, and bike back to Storrs Pond for pickup.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Saturday 27 Aug
1000 -- Meet at Storrs Pond entrance parking lot. Load sag wagon and organize for the trip.
1030 -- Start biking!
1200 -- Lunch at an opportune spot.
1245 -- Resume travel.
1500 -- Arrive at Pastures. Snack.
1515 -- Set up camp.
1545 -- Flags and camp opening.
1600 -- Activities, skills instruction, TBD.
1730 -- Dinner prep and dinner.
1830 -- Service project (Christopher).
1930 -- Campfire.
2045 -- Bed prep.
2100 -- Taps.

Sunday 28 Aug
0700 -- Reveille. Cooks start breakfast. Others start striking camp.
0800 -- Breakfast.
0900 -- Strike camp.
0930 -- Flags.
0945 -- Police and pickup. Load sag wagon.
1000 -- Start South.
1200 -- Lunch.
1245 -- Resume travel.
1500 -- Arrive at Storrs Pond entrance parking lot.
1530 -- Debrief, and depart.

Total distance 20 miles.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The total distance to bike is 20 miles, but there are few hills or other difficulties. We will be on NH 10 and US 5 for part of the trip, so good biking safety procedures are imperative. The campsite is an established commercial site with water and toilets available.

August weather is highly variable. Be Prepared.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all Scouts, Scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing. You will need a roadworthy bike and a helmet.

If you don't want to bike, you are welcome to join us at the campground.

3.0 Administration and Logistics

3.3 Costs

  • $20 for food (4 meals).
  • Troop will cover cost of campsite ($22).

    3.4 Equipment

    3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Activity uniform (Class B tee-shirt) for the biking and in camp.
  • Bring Class A uniform for flags. We will be in public.
  • Standard summer camping equipment but supplemented for any possible autumnal weather. See the Personal Equipment handout for a checklist. Pack as if you were carrying your gear!
  • Bicycle. Make sure it is roadworthy for the trip.
  • Helmet.
  • Water.

    You will want to divide your gear between what you carry with you and what you send by sag wagon. Suggested breakdown:

    In a small backpack to carry with you:
