1.0 Overview

What would you do if you were on a day hike and needed to spend the night on a mountain using only what you have in your daypack? This outing is an exercise in advanced land navigation with an opportunity to set up an overnight bivouac on Moose Mountain. There will be a few fun surprises thrown in.

Advancement opportunities include second and first class hiking, Hiking MB, and Wilderness Survival MB.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will start at the AT trailhead on Three Mile Rd, and hike up to the Mink Brook crossing. From there we will hike overland by map and compass to Destination 1. Once reaching this point we will then proceed to Destination 2 (South Peak) mostly by trail. Upon reaching the summit we will establish a bivouac and break for lunch. After lunch Matt and David will lead the troop on a side hike around the peak to Destination 3. From there it will be a piece of cake to hike back to the beginning point at Three Mile Rd.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Saturday 4 September
1000 -- Meet at Three-Mile Rd AT crossing.
1010 -- Hike to Mink Brook campsite
1015 -- Set up land nav problem
1030 -- Start compass course to destination 1.
1130 -- Arrive destination 1. Debrief. Set up next problem.
1145 -- Hike to destination 2 (South Peak).
1215 -- Arrive South Peak. Set up survival problem. Eat Lunch.
1315 -- Start Hike to Destination 3.
1335 -- Arrive Destination 3. Solve the problem.
1345 -- Start Extraction.
1430 -- Arrive Three Mile Rd.
1500 -- Pickup at Three Mile Rd.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

Moose Mountain is not very high, and it will be summer weather, so there are no particularly difficult terrain or weather issues. We will be off-trail much of the day, and we will complete the entire climb to the South Summit. Be prepared for a rigorous day hike.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all Scouts, Scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing. Scouts will be expected to sign up at the troop meeting of 1 Sep, and participants will benefit from the preparatory activities that will take place at that meeting.

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Activity uniform ("Class B" uniform) is required. If you don't have a troop T-shirt, see the Scoutmaster.
  • Standard summer hiking equipment. See the Personal Equipment handout for a checklist.
  • Be sure to have a compass.
  • Personal lunch.
