New Hampshire Jamboree

1.0 Overview

Troop 45 will participate in the New Hampshire Jamoboree, held at the Gunstock Recreation Area in Gilford, New Hampshire the weekend of October 3-5. The event will be attended by over 5000 Scouts and Scouters from the Daniel Webster Council, New England and Canada. The jamboree will feature activities including buckskin games, archery, confidence courses, rapelling, pioneering, merit badge introductions, exhibits, and more.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will meet at the Maynard Street parking lot in Hanover on Friday afternoon and travel by car to the Jamboree. We will make a McDonalds stop enroute for dinner. When we arrive we will need to carry our equipment from the parking lot to our campsite where we will pitch our tents and make camp. Saturday will be devoted to touring the exhibits and participating in the various Jamboree events. Saturday evening there will be a large theme show and and fireworks display. Sunday morning we'll have breakfast, attend the closing ceremony, break camp and come home.

2.2 Schedule of Events

1600 - Meet at Maynard Street parking lot.
1615 - Depart for Jamboree - Dinner stop on the way.
1830 - Arrive at Gunstock Recreation Area.
1830-2230 - Move to camp site, set up, leaders' meeting.
2230 - Taps

Saturday 4 October 2003
0700 - Reveille
0730 - Flag ceremony and breakfast in campsite
0900 - Jamboree opening ceremony
0930-1600 - Visit program areas, lunch on the run.
1700 - Dinner in campsite
1830-2200 - Shows and fireworks
2230 - Taps

Sunday 5 October 2003
0700 - Reveille
0730 - Flag ceremony and breakfast in campsite
0900 - Jamboree closing ceremony
0930 - Campsite cleanup, departure and return to Hanover
1230 - Estimated arrival in Hanover

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

This will not be a difficult outing; just a lot of fun. Scouts will need to carry their equipment in backpacks for a half mile or so. Fall weather could be sunny and warm or cloudy, cold and damp; be prepared for frosty nights. The activites will involve a lot of walking; Scouts should wear comfortable hiking boots.

This outing is open to all Scouts; there are no special requirements.

3.3 Costs

The cost of the Jamoboree is $15.00 per participant (Scout or Adult). Cash or checks payable to "Troop 45" may be turned in when we meet on 3 October. Scouts should also bring spending money for dinner at McDonalds and a trip to the Jamboree Trading Post.

3.4 Equipment

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

Scouts should pack individual camping equipment and plan to tent and eat in buddy pairs. Use the equipment checklist. Be prepared to be comfortable in cold or wet weather; leave the jeans and sneakers at home!

A small day pack will be useful for carrying lunch, a water bottle and rain gear on Saturday.

Class A Uniform must be worn for travel to and from the Jamboree and for ceremonies. Look sharp!

3.4.3 Troop Equipment

  • First Aid Kit
  • One Troop cook kit so we have a big pot for boiling water.

    3.5 Food Plan

    The Troop will not supply food for this outing. Scouts should plan meals with their buddy and should bring food for three meals on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Keep the meals simple. Plan meals that can be made by adding boiling water and eaten with a cup and a spoon. Saturday lunch should be back-packable with no preparation required. We will not have a campfire but we will use backpacking stoves to boil water for meal preparation and cleanup.

    3.6 Medical and Permission Forms

    Each participant must have a completed Permission and Medical Form signed by a parent or guardian. We will check these before departing from Hanover.

    3.7 Transportation Plan

    Drop-off Point: Maynard Street parking lot.
    Drop-off Time: 1600 3 October 2003.
    Pickup Point: Scouts will be returned to their homes when we get back to Hanover.
    Pickup Time: Estimated time of arrival is between 1200 and 1300.
