1.0 Overview

This is an afternoon outing where Scouts will practice tying knots and learn how to climb and belay at an indoor climbing gym.

Advancement opportunities include Second and First Class and elements of Climbing Merit Badge.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will be meeting at the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center–Quechee at 1300. After getting on harness and shoes provided by Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center, Scouts will have a belaying lesson and review safety rules. Scouts will take turns climbing and belaying. Scouts will practice knots that are used for climbing. All Scouts can learn to climb, but Scouts must be 13 years of age or older to belay other Scouts. After finishing at 1600, we will return to Hanover.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

There are climbing routes for all abilities. The weather indoors is always dry.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all Scouts, Scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing.

A Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center Waiver must be signed by the parent of each Scout who is participating. Waiver is available for download here.

3.3 Costs

$100 for the troop which will be divided among participants. Fee includes climbing day pass, equipment rental, and safety/belay lesson. For participants who wish to rappel for the climbing merit badge, the cost is an additional $25/person.
