Each autumn the BSA sponsors a "National Good Turn" called Scouting for Food in which scouting units across the country collect food donations for local and regional charities. The project proceeds in two phases on two Saturday mornings around Halloween. In the "dropoff" phase, scouts place collection bags on the doors of houses around the community. The bags are printed with instructions asking the occupant to make a donation of canned or staple food and to leave the donation in the bag on their doorstep for pickup the following weekend. On the next Saturday morning, during the "pickup" phase, the scouts then come around and collect the donations. We take them to a central location for sorting and subsequent distribution to charities in the area. Each year, the scouts of the Daniel Webster Council collect some 25 tons of food donations during the Scouting for Food good turn.
This outing is the "Pickup Phase" of Scouting for Food. We will meet at the OHP on Saturday morning, where we will divide into provisional patrols. Each patrol will be assigned to a driver who will take the patrol to an assigned neighborhood. The scouts in the patrol will then work their way through the neighborhood collecting the bags left from the previous week.
Once collection is complete, each patrol will bring the bags of food to the parking lot of Storrs Pond where a truck will be waiting to consolidate the donations and take them to the District collection point.
Afterwards, the Cub Scout Pack sponsors a picnic for all participants.
Note: The Lebanon Airport Tour is scheduled for the same day has been cancelled due to heightened security at the airport which makes many of the planned activities impossible.
This outing involves canvassing a neighborhood using cars for transportation. Please note the following safety rules:
Each provisional patrol will be assigned to a car and driver for transportation to its assigned neighborhood. The driver will remain in the area to help the patrol get around, and then will return the patrol to Storrs Pond.
